B.C. Couple's Harrowing Escape from Two Fires in 2025 (2026)

A tale of resilience and loss: a couple's journey through fire and rebuilding.

Imagine losing your home, your belongings, and your pets to a devastating fire, only to have it happen again, mere months later. This is the story of Ritchie and Rene Day, a retired couple from Grand Forks, B.C., who found themselves in the midst of two life-changing fires within a year.

But here's where it gets controversial... or at least, thought-provoking.

On a quiet evening in December 2025, Ritchie and Rene were enjoying some peace at Johnny's Motel, their temporary home after a fire had claimed their dream residence just a few months prior. Little did they know, another fire was about to change their lives yet again.

"We just couldn't believe it," Ritchie shared, reflecting on that fateful night. "Another fire. It was like a bad dream repeating itself."

The fire at Johnny's Motel displaced the Days for the second time in 2025. Along with them, short- and long-term residents from four other units lost their homes.

The couple had only just moved into the motel four months earlier, hoping to reset and navigate the complexities of insurance after their first fire. Their dream home, a labor of love for a decade, had been reduced to ash, located prominently on a main street in Grand Forks.

Ritchie recalls the night their house caught fire in late September. She had just settled into bed when Rene heard a loud noise and discovered the deck engulfed in flames. The smoke was overwhelming, and they had no time to grab anything. With only the clothes on their backs and Rene's cellphone, they escaped, watching their home burn from the street.

"No glasses, no hearing aids, no CPAp machine, nothing," Ritchie said, emphasizing the extent of their loss. But the most painful loss was their four pet birds, who perished in the fire.

"I would have done anything to save them, but we had no chance. We barely got out ourselves."

Despite the tragedy, Ritchie highlights the community's support. Neighbors provided blankets and comfort, and the generosity of the Grand Forks community was overwhelming. A fundraiser was started, businesses donated items, and people offered help in any way they could.

After staying with a friend for a few days, the Days moved into Johnny's Motel, a place they grew to love. They planned to call it home for the next year while dealing with insurance claims.

But on the evening of December 21st, their plans went up in smoke (quite literally).

Fire Chief Morgan Strohmann explained that a guest's vehicle filled with Christmas presents caught fire in the motel's parking garage, quickly spreading to the building's roof. The cause of the vehicle fire remains undetermined.

"It was just devastating," Ritchie said. "The motel was such a nice spot, and the people were so lovely. They had been so good to us."

Half of the motel is still operational, but five units, including the Days', have been deemed unsafe due to extensive damage.

The Days spent Christmas at their son's house and are now waiting to move into one of the intact units at Johnny's.

"There are certain things you have no control over, so getting too upset doesn't serve any purpose. We're not going to let ourselves be depressed," Ritchie said, determined to rebuild in 2026.

This story highlights the resilience of the human spirit and the power of community support. But it also raises questions: How do we prepare for the unexpected? What role does fate or chance play in our lives? And how do we find the strength to rebuild when faced with such losses?

What are your thoughts on this couple's journey? Do you think their resilience is inspiring, or does it make you question the randomness of life's events? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
