The 2026 BYD Shark 6 Performance ute has been unveiled, promising a powerful upgrade with a 3500kg tow rating and a 350kW 2.0-litre engine. This new model, priced at $62,900 plus on-road costs, is set to challenge the market leaders like the Toyota HiLux SR5 and Ford Ranger XLT V6 diesel. The Performance variant justifies its premium status with a more potent plug-in hybrid system, delivering an impressive 350kW and 700Nm, a significant leap from the 321kW/650Nm of the Premium grade. This power boost translates to a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.5 seconds, a 0.2-second improvement over the Premium.

What's more intriguing is the fuel efficiency claim. BYD claims the Performance variant uses less fuel, achieving 1.3 litres per 100 kilometres in lab testing when the battery has more than 25 per cent charge available to deplete, down from 2.0L/100km for the 1.5-litre version. However, the 29.58kWh battery pack remains unchanged, and BYD hasn't disclosed an electric-only range for the Performance.

The Shark 6 Performance shares the Premium's 15.6-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and a 360-degree camera. It is expected to mirror the cheaper grade's equipment list, including leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, 18-inch wheels, LED headlights, a head-up display, wireless phone charging, and dual-zone climate control. Expressions of interest are now open, with the Performance variant set to arrive in showrooms in May.

One notable feature is the introduction of a new Crawl Mode, which limits the Shark 6 to a maximum of 20km/h and continuously adjusts torque to keep the wheels moving without slipping. This mode builds upon the existing Mountain Mode and is planned to be available to Shark 6 Premium and Dynamic owners later in the year through an over-the-air software update.

The Shark 6 Performance's price tag of $62,900 plus on-road costs is a significant jump from the $57,900 of the Premium grade. However, it remains competitive when compared to the Toyota HiLux SR5 ($65,990 plus on-roads) and Ford Ranger XLT V6 diesel ($67,990 plus on-roads). The Performance's higher price is justified by its more powerful hybrid system and improved performance.

Despite the higher price, the Performance variant is expected to be a strong contender in the ute market, offering a balance of power, efficiency, and technology. The introduction of the new Crawl Mode further enhances its off-road capabilities, making it a versatile and capable vehicle for various driving conditions.
