DBS Launches Free Remittance to WeChat Pay: Revolutionizing Cross-Border Payments (2026)

Imagine sending money to China without paying a single cent in fees. Sounds too good to be true, right? But that's exactly what DBS is now offering its customers. In a move that’s set to revolutionize cross-border payments, DBS has launched a zero-remittance fee service for transfers to Chinese digital wallets, specifically Weixin Pay (also known as WeChat Pay). And this is the part most people miss: the bank is also planning to link its DBS PayLah! service to Weixin Pay, making it even easier for users to transact across borders.

Here’s how it works: DBS customers can now transfer funds directly to Weixin Pay accounts through the “overseas transfer” option in the DBS digibank app. All they need to do is enter the recipient’s Weixin-registered details, and after a 12-hour cooling-off period, the payment goes through—completely fee-free. The funds can either land in the recipient’s Weixin Pay wallet or be directed to bank cards linked to the platform.

But here’s where it gets controversial: while traditional remittance services often slap on overseas transfer fees and foreign exchange (FX) charges, DBS’s new service eliminates these costs entirely. This raises the question: could this be the beginning of the end for costly international money transfers? Or will other banks and platforms follow suit, sparking a fee-free revolution?

The timing of this launch is no coincidence. With Chinese New Year just around the corner, DBS typically sees a 30% surge in remittances to China. Sanjoy Sen, the group head of consumer banking, notes, “We’ve been seeing consistent double-digit, year-on-year growth in DBS Remit funds sent to China, reflecting the strength of cross-border ties between Singapore and the Chinese mainland.”

Yang Wenhui, CEO of TenPay Global (Tencent’s payment platform), adds, “By connecting Weixin Pay with DBS’s trusted banking and payment platforms, we are delivering compliant and user-centric cross-border solutions that simplify how money moves and how payments are made across borders.”

But DBS isn’t stopping there. The bank also aims to integrate DBS PayLah! with Weixin Pay, allowing users to scan Weixin Pay QR codes or present their own QR codes when transacting with businesses in China. This move could significantly boost convenience for travelers and businesses alike.

Here’s a thought-provoking question for you: As digital payment ecosystems become increasingly interconnected, will traditional banking fees become obsolete? Or will new challenges, like security risks or regulatory hurdles, emerge to replace them?

Meanwhile, DBS isn’t the only player making waves. On the same day, MariBank, a subsidiary of tech giant Sea Group, announced its partnership with TenPay Global and launched its own online remittance service to Weixin Pay users.
