The brave men and women who serve as firefighters face an unseen enemy: cancer. This January, we shine a spotlight on their health and the unique challenges they encounter.
Firefighters, like Drayton Bussiere, Fire Chief for Red Deer County Protective Services, know that the risks extend beyond the fire itself. "Exposure accumulates over time, and it doesn't just stay at the fire scene. It's a long-term battle," Bussiere emphasizes.
The designation of January as Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month is a national initiative, including the National Framework on Cancers Linked to Firefighting. This framework has led to significant changes, such as presumptive cancer legislation, ensuring firefighters with certain diagnoses receive the occupational health coverage they deserve.
But here's where it gets controversial: even with protective gear, the risk remains high. Bussiere explains, "The gear shields us from heat and smoke, but some chemicals in the gear can contribute to cancer. It's a complex issue."
Red Deer County is taking action with new programs and renovations, including dedicated shower facilities and enhanced decontamination processes. Bussiere highlights, "We ensure our gear is thoroughly cleaned and safe, ready for the next call."
This trend of prioritizing firefighter health is gaining momentum across the industry. "Departments are recognizing the serious health consequences and taking swift action," Bussiere says.
And this is the part most people miss: the support extends to retired firefighters too. Presumptive legislation ensures those who meet specific criteria and develop certain cancers receive coverage, acknowledging the ongoing risks post-retirement.
"Awareness is key," Bussiere adds. "The public often sees the lights and sirens, but there's so much more going on behind the scenes to keep firefighters safe."
