A bold move has been made by New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, who has decided to part ways with defensive coordinator Steve Wilks after a devastating loss to the Jaguars. This decision comes after 14 games of underwhelming performance from the Jets' defense, which has struggled to live up to expectations.
The Pressure Mounts
Glenn, in his first year as head coach, felt the need to make a change, and he did so swiftly. He appointed Chris Harris, the team's defensive backs coach and pass game coordinator, to take over Wilks' role. Glenn will also assist Harris with play-calling duties, a sign of his commitment to turning things around.
The timing of this decision is intriguing. Glenn made the call just hours after the Jets' 48-20 defeat at Jacksonville, a game in which the Jaguars dominated from start to finish. It was a clear indication that Glenn was not willing to tolerate mediocrity any longer.
A Troubled Defense
Wilks' defense had been a cause for concern all season. The Jets ranked among the league's worst in terms of run defense and points allowed, setting an NFL record with no interceptions through their first 14 games. This lack of turnover creation was a major red flag, and it highlighted the unit's inability to create game-changing plays.
The Jets had hoped for a stronger defensive performance, especially with the changes made to the coaching staff and the arrival of a new general manager, Darren Mougey. However, the defense continued to struggle, and as of Monday, they ranked 20th overall, 29th against the run, and 30th in points allowed. The pass defense, while serviceable, was not enough to mask the overall deficiencies.
The trade deadline saw the Jets part ways with two of their top defensive players, cornerback Sauce Gardner and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams. This further weakened an already inconsistent defense, leaving Wilks with a challenging task.
The Final Straw
In the weeks leading up to the Jacksonville game, the Jets' defense had shown signs of vulnerability. They allowed 167 rushing yards in a close victory over Atlanta and then surrendered 239 yards on the ground in a lopsided loss to Miami. Trevor Lawrence, the Jaguars' quarterback, exposed the Jets' weaknesses, throwing five touchdown passes and running for another score.
Glenn's initial response to the loss was to stand by Wilks, stating that he brought him to New York for a reason and wanted him to run his system. However, a few hours later, Glenn's perspective shifted, and he decided to move forward without Wilks for the final three games of the season.
"I just thought that from last week going into this week, the improvement wasn't there," Glenn explained. "And I thought it was time to make a change."
A New Beginning
Chris Harris, the new defensive coordinator, brings a wealth of experience to the role. During his playing career, he recorded 16 interceptions as a safety, and he has since coached with several NFL teams, including the Bears, Chargers, Washington, and Tennessee. Glenn believes Harris' experience calling defensive plays in the preseason will serve him well in his new position.
"This is a league of change," Glenn said. "And with change comes opportunity. This will be a good chance for Harris to showcase his abilities."
The Jets' defense has a long road ahead, but with Harris at the helm, they hope to see consistent improvement, structure, and a unified culture. The final three games of the season will be a true test of the team's resilience and ability to adapt.
