In a surprising turn of events, Justin Verlander is making a much-anticipated return to the Detroit Tigers after signing a one-year contract worth $13 million. This reunion marks a significant moment for both the player and the franchise, as it takes place on Tuesday in Lakeland, Florida.
As Verlander approaches his 43rd birthday on February 20, he is eager to bounce back from what has been a challenging season with the San Francisco Giants. Notably, this contract includes an intriguing financial arrangement—$11 million of it will be deferred, commencing in 2030.

"The first half was quite difficult," Verlander shared after his final game on September 27. "I’m glad I was able to identify some mechanical adjustments that helped me get back on track and pitch effectively in the second half. Ideally, you want everything to go smoothly, but it's rewarding to see improvement, especially after going through a draining period. Maintaining a positive mindset and consistently working hard is crucial, even when faced with challenges."
Last January, Verlander had inked a $15 million deal with the Giants, where his home debut was less than memorable. Throughout the season, the Giants struggled to provide adequate run support, compounding his difficulties.
