A daring adventure takes a turn for the worse! An individual's attempt to reach Cramond Island, a tidal island off Edinburgh's coast, on an inflatable mattress ended with a dramatic rescue. But here's where it gets controversial...
The man, let's call him Mr. Adventurer, embarked on his journey at 8 AM, equipped with nothing more than an airbed and normal clothes. Little did he know, the icy waters of the Firth of Forth, a mere 7 degrees Celsius, would prove to be a formidable challenge.
As Mr. Adventurer ventured towards Cramond Island, approximately one mile offshore, he encountered difficulties. The currents, combined with an offshore wind, dragged him off course. Realising the gravity of the situation, he made the wise decision to call for help.
And this is the part most people miss: Cramond Island is accessible via a paved path at low tide, but this path is submerged during high tide. Mr. Adventurer, unaware of the changing tides, found himself drifting further offshore.
The RNLI Queensferry Lifeboat crew arrived just in time. They described the casualty as extremely cold, a testament to the harsh conditions of the sea. Mr. Adventurer was wrapped in warm blankets and assessed for further medical attention.
Stewart Atkinson, a member of the RNLI Queensferry Lifeboat team, shared a crucial lesson: "Blow-up toys and airbeds are designed for pools, not the sea." He emphasised the importance of checking forecasts and tide conditions, especially when venturing offshore.
