The Future of Wealth Management: A Conversation with Corient CEO Kurt MacAlpine

In the world of wealth management, few figures are as forward-thinking as Kurt MacAlpine, CEO of Corient. With a bold vision and a unique approach, MacAlpine has been making waves in the industry since launching Corient in 2020. But what sets Corient apart, and how is it disrupting the traditional model of wealth management? I had the pleasure of sitting down with MacAlpine to discuss his journey, his insights, and his ambitious plans for the future.

A New Model for Wealth Management

MacAlpine's journey began with a simple yet powerful idea: wealth management should be run like a professional services firm. By eliminating internal competition and creating a culture of collaboration, Corient offers clients a comprehensive and seamless experience. This model, in his words, "eliminates internal competition among advisors for clients and assets and creates a culture of providing the client with whatever they need, no matter who provides it."

What makes this model particularly fascinating is its ability to foster a sense of unity and shared purpose among advisors. Unlike traditional wealth management firms, where advisors often operate in silos, Corient's structure encourages collaboration and a client-centric approach. MacAlpine explains, "Clients are clients of the firm. We collaborate across the firm to serve clients together, so they aren’t limited to one or two advisors that onboarded them to the firm for their source of expertise."

The Power of Global Reach

One of the key strengths of Corient is its global footprint. With a presence in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, Corient is uniquely positioned to serve ultra-high-net-worth clients across borders. MacAlpine highlights, "We’re certainly the only global independent wealth manager in the space, and how we’re global—through one unified partnership, through one global compensation model, through one global P&L—allows us to serve global families in a way that banks and other institutions that are in multiple jurisdictions just can’t do."

This global reach is not just about expanding Corient's client base; it's about providing a truly comprehensive service. MacAlpine elaborates, "We have traditional wealth advisory, traditional and alternative investment management, global financial planning capabilities, global wealth transfer capabilities, global tax capabilities, global trust capabilities, a global family office with built-in outsourced CFO, customized reporting, concierge lending, we manage complex residential real estate projects, we have an aviation business where we own aircraft on behalf of clients around the world, and we have art management."

Acquisitions and Growth

Corient's rapid growth is evident in its recent acquisitions. The firm has acquired Summit Trail Advisors for $21 billion and has made strategic moves in the U.K. with Stonehage Fleming and Stanhope Capital Group. MacAlpine shares, "When we went global, we bought the largest and the second-largest independent ultra-high-net-worth wealth managers on the same day. That was important because when you’re going global, I think the mistake that a lot of folks make is that they establish a presence in multiple jurisdictions but don't actually build any relevant scale."

These acquisitions are not just about expanding Corient's footprint; they're about strengthening its capabilities and creating a truly global wealth management firm. MacAlpine explains, "We did these two acquisitions, and now that we have the local scale, the multi-jurisdictional capabilities, and the partnership, we’ve announced two more acquisitions in Europe: an $11 billion business and a $5 billion business—one in Geneva, one in Paris."

A Permanent Strategic Partner

Corient's success is also attributed to its partnership with Mubadala Capital. MacAlpine describes, "They’ve been amazing. We’ve more than doubled the size of the firm since January, and they’ve been incredible partners as part of the journey. They believed and saw the potential of the business, hence the desire to partner with us to take the company private."

The relationship with Mubadala Capital is a testament to Corient's unique position in the market. MacAlpine emphasizes, "We’re very uniquely positioned here as well because this is permanent strategic capital. Our industry, as you know, is rife with private equity, which by definition is temporary capital. If you’re taking a forever time horizon to build a business, it’s very different than a two-to-four-year time horizon."

The Future of Wealth Management

Looking ahead, MacAlpine sees a bright future for Corient and the wealth management industry. He believes that the need for global advice is growing, with more wealth being created and changing hands faster than ever. MacAlpine concludes, "I think there’s more to come for us. Strategically, we built it brick by brick, market by market in the U.S., because the U.S. lends itself to that—one regulator, one language, four primary time zones. Internationally, it’s harder to do. You need the scale and the multi-jurisdictional capabilities to start, and then you can start to go market by market, which is what we’ve started to do."

In my opinion, MacAlpine's vision for Corient is not just a disruption in wealth management; it's a revolution. By embracing a global perspective and a collaborative model, Corient is setting a new standard for the industry. As the wealth management landscape continues to evolve, Corient is poised to lead the way, offering clients a truly exceptional and comprehensive experience.
