World Rugby has officially announced that the esteemed annual men’s U20 competition will undergo a rebranding starting in 2026, transitioning from its former title, the World Rugby U20 Championship, to the newly named World Rugby Junior World Championship. This revamped format will take place in Georgia from June 27 through July 18, showcasing five rounds of riveting matches across Tbilisi and Kutaisi.
This marks Georgia's second time hosting this prestigious tournament, having previously welcomed it in 2017, where a memorable final saw New Zealand triumph over England with a score of 64-17. That match was particularly notable for featuring future All Blacks stars such as Will Jordan and Caleb Clarke.
For the first time since 2009, the tournament will embrace a 16-team format, welcoming new competitors such as Fiji, the USA, Japan, and Uruguay—teams that have risen to prominence since the last U20 Trophy in 2024, alongside those who participated in the 2025 edition held in Italy.
The Team Pools for JWC 2026 Are as Follows:
- Pool A: South Africa, Wales, Georgia, Uruguay
- Pool B: New Zealand, Italy, Scotland, Japan
- Pool C: Argentina, England, Ireland, USA
- Pool D: France, Australia, Spain, Fiji
From these pools, the leading team in each group will advance to the semi-finals, while the second-placed teams will compete for fifth to eighth positions. The third and fourth-placed teams will battle for rankings from ninth to twelfth and thirteenth to sixteenth, respectively, with seeding determined by points accrued during the pool stage.

Kutaisi will play a vital role as one of the main hosts, featuring two of the pools and welcoming former champions like New Zealand and France at the AIA Arena. Meanwhile, Avchala Stadium in Tbilisi will host Pools A and C, which include reigning champions South Africa and previous winners England, along with the host nation, Georgia.
The knockout stages will unfold over two days per round, culminating in the highly anticipated third-place playoff and the grand final at the Mikheil Meskhi Stadium in Tbilisi on July 18.
